DisTorTion - Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake was one of my most anticipated games of all time, when it was first announced in 2015. Throughout the waiting time for the game all the way up to it's release, I was expecting an exact remake of the original, akin to other Square Enix remakes. I was initially confused when this game was announced to be released as a series. But after this first instalment, I'm salivating at the chance to see the rest.

Gameplay

Final Fantasy VII Remake has one of the best combat systems I've seen in any modern RPG. The combat reminds me a lot of Kingdom Hearts, however the combat still is able to have a distinctive Final Fantasy VII feel with the Magic, ATB, and Limit systems, all of which blend together beautifully. Throughout my two play-throughs of the game, the combat never felt stale at any point. Especially in Hard Mode, every fight feels different, always keeping the players thinking. The enemies themselves are also fantastic, beautifully remade from the original, or re-imagined completely, such as the Hell House.

Story

The storytelling of Final Fantasy VII Remake is unchanged in the grander scale of things, but overall, the storytelling is my favourite part about the game. The remake covers around 5 or more hours of the original game's story, but at absolutely no point did it feel like it was just being stretched out. With the time and love put into developing the game into chapters, it gave so much opportunity to give new life to the characters we know and love, something I felt was lacking in the original. The game does a fantastic job developing each character in the game and their relationships over time. The game does it best work as well in fleshing out each member of Avalanche, in Jessie Biggs, and Wedge, making them real, fleshed out characters rather than just the background in the original. A section I'd really like to cover is the sections where Cloud and Aerith travel together over the rooftops and the collapsed expressway. The chatty, cheerful Aerith gets to show so much personality in these sections, slowly chipping away from Cloud's hard edge and slowly developing a companionship into a sort of friendship between the two. These sections faintly reminded me of when I was playing The Last of Us for the first time with Ellie and Joel's dynamic. These are my favourite sections in the whole game, and it does so much in introducing Aerith to new players, and redefining her for the old. The new story aspects such as the Whispers are an interesting addition, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of their involvement and origin in the future parts. The Odd Jobs side quests also does a good job in showing more of certain characters, and shows you more of the state of certain locations in the game.

Graphics and Visuals

Goddamn, this game is beautiful. Every environment in this game brings my memories of playing the original to life. From the desolate, yet lively state of the Sector 7 Slums, to the vibrant, grandiose of Wall Market, or the dank, ominous aura of the underground Shinra lab, this game does absolutely fantastic in capturing the environment of their locations. It really achieves in conveying the location's feeling to the player purely from visuals. The cut-scenes as well also do wonders in conveying emotion from both it's environments, and dialogue. I only had one visual incident with the game. In the middle of the Reno/Rude boss fight in Chapter 12, my game just suddenly crashed. No overheating issues, just...crashed. I tried rebooting the game, but the visuals were really distorted, and then crashed a second time almost straight away. But after a third reboot, the issue was gone and never rose up again. It was weirdly frustrating, but it never ruined the experience for me overall.

Soundtrack

Ever since I started playing video games, the thing that's always resonated with me most after I finish it the soundtrack. I could forget story points or game-play eventually, but a strong soundtrack will always resonate with me for years to come. And this one is just fantastic. In both the new tracks, and the re-imagined originals, this OST is just amazing. Even after finishing the game, I still see myself just listening to the OST in my free time. It does a fantastic job in recreating the nostalgia of the original, and reminding me of my experiences of playing the Remake.

Overall

If every Chapter from here gets even of a fraction of the love, passion, and care from Square Enix that this one has, I'll be happy. This game adds so many amazing layers to an already classic game. Thanks to this Remake, I've been able to be invested in every character more that I've ever did through my whole experience of the original. The gameplay is just fantastic, and creates a blend between modern RPG combat and the traditional Final Fantasy VII feel. And the new aspects to the story adds another aspect of uncertainty to a story we've all known for a long time, and I can't wait to see the future of Final Fantasy VII Remake. I would easily recommend this to die hard fans of the original, as much as I would to a complete newcomer to the series.

10/10
