Game Review - Persona 5 on PlayStation 3

The Persona series games have always been a staple for me growing up- I spent pretty much all of my teen years playing them and I'm pretty attached. So of course, I bought Persona 5 the day it released. Playing through it for the first time, I immediately fell in love with the new mechanics left out in 3 & 4, such as demon negotiations, hiding in shadows, guns, confidant skills, and sneak attacking enemies. Palaces in general are *so* fun; a much needed improvement to the grindy & samey dungeons of the past. The UI was stylish and looked flashy and fun without being a pain to read, the art was gorgeous, and the story immediately draws you in. Persona games have a bad habit of having a very long intro before getting to some actual plot meat, but Persona 5 brings interesting plot right to you almost right out the gate! I found the story fun and engaging, albeit a bit predictable, and the characters were easy to love. All in all, I quite enjoyed my first run of Persona 5.

That said, looking back on it, the rose colored lenses fall off a bit. Looking back on the writing, there's a lot of things I'm really not quite fond of; the fate of the traitor is one of them, as is the sidelining of some of the main characters in your party (I feel like I hardly know Haru at all, despite her being one of the main characters), and the way characters will sometimes do things that seem out of character for the sake of a gag. And of course, there's some jokes I simply don't care for that unfortunately worm their way into the series as a whole often? things like creeping on high school girls, making gay people predatory... you get the gist. Stuff like this showing up in the writing is actually one of the things that bothers me the most; were the plot and message of the game different, I could excuse it, however... The plot of the game is based around rising up as the "outcasts" of society, and going against those who try to beat you down. The hypocrisy can be astounding sometimes; while the very first introductory palace's messages is to not sexualize women, especially young girls, and to shun pedophiles, the game goes for a mass amount of jokes sexualizing Ann, a victim of teacher-student sexual abuse. This continues throughout the game, and honestly puts a bad taste in my mouth.

That said, I still enjoy a lot of things about this game! The gameplay is fun, and the characters, while sometimes inconsistent in personality, are lovable. It's a gorgeous game visually with an awesome jazzy soundtrack to match. Going on the final heist in a palace to steal the treasure for the first time is an experience that makes you feel super cool, and it continues to feel that way throughout the game. There are some very emotional moments, and plenty of moments that make you feel strong. Persona fusing is easy enough to be accessible to beginners, but going deep into the fusing system mechanics to get exactly what you want can make you extremely powerful. There are also multiple difficulties that allow you to decide how hard you want your game to be, including a "safe" and "impossible" mode. And of course, with so many confidants to unlock, you can always go for replays to complete those you didn't get in your first runs.

All in all, I like Persona 5. Though I think it's writing needs some work, it's still super fun, and downright gorgeous to boot. If you can forgive it's flaws, you'll definitely have a good time.
